Shared
Experience by Mariella Vella
I
am a 32 year old mother of a young toddler of 2 and a half years. I
just wanted to share my experience about breastfeeding with you, so
that we can learn from each other .
Well, during my pregnancy I wasn’t that keen about breastfeeding. I
wasn’t surrounded by people that encouraged me either. Then there
was a close friend of mine who was pregnant too and told me about
this 3 day course about breastfeeding that Kana movement was
organizing and I decided to attend. I don’t regret it that I went
because I completely changed my attitude regarding the subject. I
found the course really helpful and Maria was really good in
explaning everything.
The
most important thing that made me courage was that she kept telling us
that the important thing is to try and do our best but if something
goes wrong and we discontinue
We
should never be guilty about it the important thing is to try and do
our best and let God do the rest.
To
know that there are people ready to help also gave me lots of courage
too.
When my baby girl was born I put her to my breast immediately and it
was a marvelous sensation to see her sucking.I t all came very
naturally. Thank God I had no problems everything was going rather
well.
But
when she was about 2 months old something happened that really
shocked me.
I
was breastfeeding her during the night and my breast was really full,
as soon as she began there was a lot of flow and she nearly chocked.
We took her to the nearest health centre but Thank God she was ok.
From then on I was really tense when the feeding arrived so, as it is
all a cycle that begins from the mind the flow of milk dindn’t remain
the same and my baby could sense that I wasn’t calm too. Anyway
during that time I was so afraid that it would happen again that I
decided to stop. Now I know that the same thing could have happened
even with a bottle.Even more the symptoms could have been worst with a
bottle because formula milk is thicker than natural milk.
Anyway I am really proud that she drank breast milk for the first
months of her life. I know that I made a very good choice when I
decided to breastfeed my baby .I know that although it was for a short
time it was beneficial for her health and even for me.
Second time around I know that if it would happen again and
definitely won’t stop.
I
just want to encourage all of you who aren’t sure about breastfeeding,
to seek for help and advice because once you get to know the benefits
you get I am sure that you won’t miss the chance. The bond that you get
when breastfeeding is incredible.
If
you decide to breastfeed you must be committed because it takes you
more of your time then bottle feeding but from my short experience I
can reassure you that it’s really worth it!
